OUR INTERVIEW WITH SADI & SARI - A BOHO CHIC CLOTHING BRAND HERE IN CANADA
1. How did the name Sadi & Sari come about?
Sadi and Sari are two childhood nicknames a couple of loved ones gave me. Some people assume there are two people, but it’s just me! Sadi is a nickname my mom and grandfather gave me, and Sari was given to me by a caregiver whose near and dear to my heart named Hazel. When I was thinking of a name for the business I thought they were catchy and meaningful to me.
2. Was fashion always your main interest?
Absolutely, it was always one of my main interests (next to sports and travel). When I was really young, I remember picking out a fancy dress I got for a wedding with matching lace gloves to wear to school, whenever my mom would let me. As I got older, my favourite past time was looking through magazines at all the amazing fashions while eating too much candy with my older sister... and the passion continues!
3. Did you see yourself here 5 years ago?
I always knew I had a passion for fashion, but I didn’t see the business exactly as it is today as Sadi & Sari. Over the years, I’ve had a lot of ideas about how to make fashion a career, but I only took the leap last year. Sadi & Sari was dreamt up which vacationing with my husband on a Caribbean beach. And I owe a ton of gratitude to all those who’ve supported me (including the girl gang!), and to the MBA that gave me the courage to do something about it.
4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5?
I’d love to be in a place where I continue to share my love of fashion with others, and open up my business to new friends and partnerships. There are a few extensions to the business I’ve considered outside what we offer today and ways to give back to our communities. Oh, and if we can weave my love of yoga and SUP boarding in there I’ll be happy!
5. If you had to go on a last-minute trip with one backpack, what are your go-to items (spring trip)?
Assuming I was already wearing my fav converse hi-tops... I’d bring some organic granola bars, cell phone and charger, makeup bag, way too many Sephora samples of face, hair and body products (best space-saver), flat iron, and some Sadi & Sari boho headband, cute distressed jeans, and a flowy top! Oh, and rarely do I travel without a good fashion magazine...
6. Are you a big traveller and where do you get most of your inspiration from?
Absolutely! I live and work for travel... I try to go away at least 3 times a year by plane. I am literally a workaholic, and so I have to get on the plane somewhere in order to relax. My favourite places to visit that inspired my styles are Vancouver, Mexico, Costa Rica and California. All of these places share a laid back, boho vibe that’s relaxed and trendy. I also love their passion for bright colours, embroidery, and bold patterns.
7. What would you say your weaknesses are?
Jewelry, shopping, trying new restaurants and a good glass of wine! And on a personal level, I get bored easily. Those who know me know that I’m constantly seeking out the next challenge. So finding the time and space to balance myself is important.
8. Who is one of your female role models and why?
My grandma Dietze and childhood caregiver, Hazel. Both of these women were the strong, caring, gutsy and the sort of defeat all odds kind of gals. You didn’t mess around with them lol. From a very young age, they pushed me to be a better version myself, never forgot a special moment and were always there when I needed them.
9. What do you find the most rewarding aspect of being your own boss?
The ability to create something from a crazy thought or idea is simply amazing. A friend told me the other day “everything in this world was created by someone’s idea”, and when you think about that, it’s pretty cool to believe you can create literally anything simply from thoughts. But... is it all that simple... nope! But that’s the beauty of putting in the work and seeing it all come together.
10. If you weren't doing this, what do you think you'd be doing?
Probably planning my next beach vacation, online shopping and seeking out the next yoga or stand up paddleboarding adventure.
