ABOUT HASTKALA

At Hastkala, we specialize in helping our customers send warm, fuzzy feelings to their loved ones through our thoughtfully created bespoke, handmade, paper quilled greeting cards, wall art, and desk stationery. Hastkala is a social enterprise supporting immigrant and refugee women access education and training to be financially independent.

Hast means hand and kala means craft. So, Hastkala means handcrafted. And this is exactly what I do. I use paper quilling as my medium to make greeting cards, wall art, ornaments, and desk stationery. I started quilling a few years ago as a hobby but slowly realized that quilling brought me peace and calm like nothing else. After a stressful day, nothing made me happier or more peaceful than quilling.

In May 2020, my 4-year old niece asked me to send flowers on paper to her mother. Seeing the happiness on her face when she received the paper quilled flowers for her mother as a Mother's Day gift made me think that maybe I could do this and bring smiles to other little (and not so little people) as well. She gave me the idea to turn my passion into a side hustle.  Once I got hooked onto the idea of a side hustle, I started thinking about how I could use this platform to help others and give back to the community. Thus, was born the social enterprise, Hastkala.

Through Hastkala I support immigrant and refugee women access education so they can be gainfully employed.  About me: Surabhi is the creator behind Hastkala products. She is a non-profit professional by day, an artist by night, and a photographer by weekend. She loves creating art to give back to the community and support other women. Surabhi started quilling a few years ago as a means to de-stress but has since turned her passion into a social enterprise. When she is not working or quilling, Surabhi can be found photographing around Toronto or travelling to explore new places, food, people, and culture.
